Catalan Protesters Demand Discharge of Jailed Separatist Leaders

The demonstration was organized by two pro-independence groups, the National Catalan Assembly along with Omnium Cultural. Their leaders are among nine separatists in prison awaiting trial for their roles in last year’s failed breakaway bid by the northeastern Spanish region.

The regional chapters of Spain’s two leading labor unions, along with different civil society groups, supported the protest, despite the complaints via some members who disagree with secession for Catalonia. The Barcelona police said some 300,000 people participated from the protest.
