Jake Gyllenhaal on Ambivalent Heroes in addition to, Um, Perms

What do you mean by “change” in that will instance?

Jeff today is usually somebody who is usually a dad, who didn’t believe he could ever do the item. He’s sober today 15 months, post finishing the movie. He has changed exponentially within the past 15 months. More than anybody I know. yet the item doesn’t come without him struggling. the item’s not like, “Oh, I’ve had my troubles with alcohol in addition to then all of sudden they’re just gone.” Sometimes movies do paint things like that will, in addition to I think some of those things are misleading.

The physicality is usually amazing. Your hair was definitely curly. Did you get a perm?

Yep, I got a perm. Yes, I did.

I didn’t know that will you could even do that will anymore.

Yes. the item was a soft perm, because we didn’t want the item to be too curly. When you see Jeff’s hair, you know, the item’s a distinctive feature. His hair is usually very specific. So Donald Mowat, — he’s an amazing makeup artist — said, “I think to get the kind of messiness that will Jeff has, we should do a perm.” in addition to I was, like, ‘I’m always down for a perm, you know?’

How many have you had? Was the item tough, chemically?

the item was my first. in addition to yeah, the item was smelly.

Obviously when I said physicality, I meant the fact that will you had to haul around your whole body with your arms in addition to pretend you didn’t have legs. How do you prepare for something like that will?

I spent almost a year with Jeff before we began shooting the movie. The first week that will I met him, we all met up, we went to dinner in [a hotel] banquet room. Jeff took off his Genium Ottobock legs in addition to showed me how he put them on, took them off, in addition to how he moved around the room. in addition to that will was the very first moment that will I saw him navigate a space without his bionic legs. in addition to then over a year I saw the item over in addition to over in addition to over again. When he would likely get on the floor, I would likely get on the floor with him, in addition to the item was a perspective in addition to a height differentiation that will was sort of infantilizing. People end up talking to you in addition to treating you differently in a way, not knowing how to relate. Also one of the keys was — The brand-new York Times did a Pulitzer Prize-winning piece on him. in addition to I asked Jeff if there was any outtakes. that will was definitely during the period of time where he was just totally lost. the item was only a month or so after the event. Everything was raw. the item’s palpable, his feelings, in addition to his eyes, in addition to experience of what’s going on. For me, behaviorally, the item was a gold mine

Had you spent that will much time which has a subject?

Only once before kind of, with many police officers when I was doing “End of Watch.” One of the police officers is usually one of my closest friends today. yet nothing compares to that will. I feel like the item’s so much more than a movie today. Because [Jeff’s] my friend, in addition to because all the people around him I know, in addition to I love them. When you’re with him, anything that will you might normally complain about ends up seeming so petty in addition to modest. that will’s how he makes you feel. the item’s his spirit. He includes a light.
