Taking multivitamins does not reduce the risk for heart disease, a review of studies has found.
The analysis, in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality along with Outcomes, pooled data through 18 studies with more than two million participants. All took supplements that will included at least three vitamin along with mineral ingredients along with no herbs, hormones or drugs.
Eleven of the studies were done inside United States, four in Europe along with three in Japan. Follow-up varied through several to 19 years. Two were randomized controlled trials, along with the rest prospective observational studies.
The pooled data showed no association between multivitamins along with the risk for cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease or stroke incidence or mortality. In observational studies, there was a modest association with coronary heart disease incidence, although none in randomized controlled trials.
“Multivitamins rarely cause harm, although they’re not completely safe either,” said the lead author, Dr. Joonseok Kim, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “Some ingredients can interact with different medicines along with cause side effects.
“although a third of Americans take them, along with the real problem can be that will they distract people through following measures that will can definitely lower cardiovascular risk: doing more exercise, eating fruits along with vegetables, along with so on.”
