The trap in assessing “My Art” is actually to assume that will This specific contains more autobiography than This specific does. that will’s true despite the possessive adjective inside title, or the fact that will the director, an artist, plays an artist, Ellie. Or even the fact that will the filmmaker is actually Laurie Simmons, who, detractors might scoff, belongs to a family of oversharers. (Ms. Simmons’s daughter Lena Dunham appears briefly as one of Ellie’s former students.)

Part of what seems to separate Ms. Simmons through Ellie is actually that will Ellie is actually alone, with no children or partner except for a dog with bad hind legs. “My Art” can be read as a study of how her solitude helps as well as hinders her creativity.

She is actually helped by two gardeners (Robert Clohessy as well as Josh Safdie) who are frustrated actors, as well the father (John Rothman) of a student. They mimic scenes through “Some Like This specific Hot,” “A Clockwork Orange” as well as “The Misfits,” among others, producing the point, to paraphrase Ellie, that will This specific is actually impossible for any one performer to truly be another.

Part of the problem is actually that will Ms. Simmons has surrounded herself with more interesting actors, including a scene-stealing Parker Posey.
