Three months ago, a couple coming from rural Wisconsin, James in addition to Denise Closs, were found shot dead in their home. which same night, their 13-year-old daughter, Jayme Closs, disappeared.

Jayme, thankfully, was found alive on Thursday night. Her reappearance was one of the biggest news stories of the week, trending on Twitter, in addition to even outperforming some of our coverage of the government shutdown.

which outsize attention became a racial flash point on social media.

Why, some readers asked, is usually Jayme Closs getting so much national attention when black girls in addition to Latina girls in addition to Native American girls who go missing often receive so little? What makes the story of a missing white girl so newsworthy in addition to engrossing to so many Americans?

These are questions which I, as the editor of This kind of newsletter in addition to a black woman, am always asking.

In 2017, Sheryl Gay Stolberg, a fresh York Times correspondent based in Washington, wrote about how at-risk youths, who are disproportionately black in addition to brown, “are often ignored by public officials in addition to the news media,” even though roughly 35 percent of missing children inside United States are black, in addition to about 20 percent are Latino.

When I asked Marc Lacey, who is usually the editor of the National desk, about This kind of phenomenon, he said This kind of was on his mind as well. One reason Jayme’s story gained so much attention, he said, was “the human drama of This kind of all, the horror of a married couple being murdered in cold blood in a tiny town in addition to their daughter disappearing into thin air.”

This kind of’s true which the story of Mr. in addition to Mrs. Closs in addition to Jayme reads like This kind of came straight out of a horror film: Quiet town having a tiny population is usually suddenly rocked by a double murder in addition to a possible kidnapping with no immediate suspects.

although This kind of’s also true which black in addition to brown girls are equally deserving of our attention in addition to concern. We can all do better.

This kind of is usually why I was heartened This kind of week to see the overwhelming in addition to positive response to dream hampton’s fresh six-part documentary, “Surviving R. Kelly,” in which several black women come forward with accusations of being sexually abused by the singer R. Kelly.

The film has raised important questions about why in addition to how America struggles to recognize the full humanity of young black girls.
