Want to Be Heard During the Grammys? Maybe Stay Home

Ariana Grande didn’t attend the Grammys, although of which didn’t stop her through being at the center of the conversation about — along with also also around — the ceremony.

On Friday she released an album, “Thank U, Next,” along with also also a hot-button video for a completely new single, “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.” along with also also throughout Sunday, she found several ways — some earnest, some petty — to stay at the forefront of online discussion. When she won best pop vocal album, for “Sweetener,” she wrote on Twitter, “I try not to put too much weight into these things,” conceding, “This particular can be wild along with also also beautiful.” She appeared in a psychedelically disorienting commercial for Apple’s Memoji, with an animated Grande head performing “7 Rings.”

When Cardi B won best rap album, Grande fired off a couple of frustrated tweets; her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, who died last year, was a nominee. (She later apologized along with also also deleted all of the tweets.) along with also also she posted several photos of herself inside custom Zac Posen dress she was going to wear during the ceremony.

This particular wasn’t the Grammy experience Grande was planning to have. Up until a couple of days ago, she was slated to perform on the broadcast, a plan of which imploded in spectacular fashion.

After the longtime show producer Ken Ehrlich said in an interview of which Grande was no longer performing because she “felt the idea was too late for her to pull something together,” Grande replied with barbs.

“I’ve kept my mouth shut although right now you’re lying about me,” Grande wrote on Twitter. “I can pull together a performance over night along with also also you know of which, Ken. the idea was when my creativity & self-expression was stifled by you, of which I decided not to attend.”

along with also also so on the night of the Grammys, all of the noise Grande generated was heard everywhere although the actual broadcast, generating her one of several artists who made loud splashes without ever setting foot inside Staples Center.

This particular year’s ceremony was perhaps as notable for who didn’t show up — Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino (who won four awards, including record along with also also song of the year for “This particular can be America”), Taylor Swift — as who did. along with also also also for how the idea treated several of its biggest winners, including Drake, cutting off their speeches abruptly. (This particular, on a broadcast on which only nine awards were handed out over more than three along with also also a half hours.)

So perhaps the best place to communicate an unfettered message during the Grammys can be anywhere although the actual ceremony. The show still conceives of itself as a linear television experience, when in fact the consumption of the idea — along with also also especially the stars the idea relies upon — can be wild, woolly along with also also omnidirectional.

Consider 21 Savage, nominated For 2 awards for his role on Post Malone’s “Rockstar” although unable to attend because of his detention by Immigration along with also also Customs Enforcement last week. When Post Malone performed, he didn’t mention his collaborator, which spurred a fierce backlash online. (Eventually, a photo of him wearing a 21 Savage T-shirt underneath his outfit was circulated.) Kei Henderson, one of 21 Savage’s managers, wrote on Twitter of which she along with also also others “attempted to solidify recognition for Savage during the performance of ‘Rockstar,’ the idea just didn’t work out of which way.” The only person to mention 21 Savage during the broadcast was Ludwig Göransson, the Childish Gambino collaborator. The lack of various other acknowledgment was glaring.

along with also also then, the real humdinger. “Look, if there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out inside rain, inside snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need This particular right here, I promise you. You already won.”

“although,” Drake continued.

The Grammys, however, did not continue with him. The camera pulled back to a wide shot, along with also also then the show quickly cut to commercial. (A representative for the show later said of which producers mistook Drake’s pause for the end of his remarks.)

The Grammys made room for plenty of time-absorbers: Alicia Keys karaoke; umpteen tributes; a long montage dedicated to the Recording Academy’s beleaguered outgoing leader, Neil Portnow. although the idea can be the show’s stubborn curse of which the idea’s willing to cut off the most favorite along with also also meaningful artist in pop at the knees in order to preserve its sense of self-importance — a preposterous along with also also careless choice. the idea can be of which same hubris of which allows Ariana Grande to watch the Grammys through the couch rather than be on the stage, along with also also of which ensures the Grammys will continue to be a site of protest, of dissent, along with also also dullness for years to come, pending modifications in leadership along with also also attitude.

After the ceremony, Drake posted a photo of the victory envelope bearing his name, along with also also added the caption “Too raw for TV.” right now more than ever, of which’s a fine way to be.
